劈柴•打水•千里达

有一句祝酒词，比较特别，是这样的：

“为所有在座的朋友们和同志们的健康，他们进行着共同的斗争，争取各国人民在和平与和谐中生活的不可侵犯的权利，不论他们的国家大小和怎样不发达，不论他们的种族和肤色如何，都能够免于饥饿、疾病和文盲状态，而不再为剥削他们的自然资源的老板和公司劈柴、打水，干杯！”

这一段话，是特立尼达和多巴哥总理威廉斯博士一九七四年十一月五日在北京宴会上说的。

“特立尼达和多巴哥”是美洲加勒比海的岛国，其英文名称为“Trinidad and Tobago”。

“Trinidad”这一个岛，当地华侨称为“千里达”*，他们是从中国千里迢迢的到达该地的，这一译名可谓音义俱备。

“Tobago”这个岛，相传是烟草的发源地之一，因而得名。“烟草”的英文为“Tobacco”。据小说写道，这是《鲁宾逊漂流记》的主人翁所到的岛屿。

岛国风光绮丽，林木青葱，土地肥沃，物产富饶，一向为殖民主义者所觊觎。这大概就是威廉斯总理在祝酒词中有感而发，说“不再为剥削他们的自然资源的老板和公司劈柴、打水”了吧。

这一段祝酒词，威廉斯总理讲的原文是这样的：

A toast to the health of all present friends and comrades in the common struggle for the imprescriptible rights of peoples of all countries, big or small, however under-developed, whatever their race or color, to live their lives in peace and harmony, free from hunger, sickness and illiteracy, no longer hewers of wood and drawers of water for individual or corporate entrepreneurs exploiting their national resources.

“劈柴、打水”，英文原文为“hewers of wood and drawers of water”，语出《圣经》。

《圣经》旧约“Joshua”（《约书亚记》）第九章第二十一节的英文是这样的：

And the princes said unto them, let them live; but let them be hewers of woods and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

《圣经》中文本译文如下：

“首领又对会众说，要容他们活着。于是他们为全会众作了劈柴挑水的人，正如首领对他们所说的话。”

*（编者注）“千里达”（Trinidad）是粤语与中文音义俱全的译法，类此的还有南太平洋的法属塔希提岛（Tahiti），粤语将其译为“大溪地”。也有只用粤语译音的，如加拿大的蒙特利尔（Montreal），当地华侨称其为“满地可”。初到此地的不懂粤语的中国人怎么也不明白为什么称此地为“满地可”，用广东话一念就清楚了。
