朱自清的《背影》英译

香港学校中文科所选的教材，是古文多，今文少，文言文多，白话文少。已有不少人提出，这样的重古轻今，是不对的。

在中文课本中少得可怜的白话文中，朱自清的作品算是比较多的了，中一有《背影》和《荷塘月色》，中二有《春》，中三有《一张小小的横幅》和《伦敦的动物园》，中四有《论说话》，而中学会考又选了《背影》。

《背影》是在一九二五年写成的，写父子之情，老是哭哭啼啼，今天看来，是多余的了。不过，坐在描述其父亲横过铁道的一段，有人还是津津乐道的。

且看这一段：

我看见他戴着黑布小帽，穿着黑布大马褂，深青布棉袍，蹒跚地走到铁道边，慢慢探身下去，尚不大难。可是他穿过铁道，要爬上那边月台，就不容易了。他用两手攀着上面，两脚再向上缩；他肥胖的身子向左微倾，显出努力的样子，这时我看见他的背影，我的泪很快地流下来了。••••••

朱自清的作品，英译是少见的，这一篇《背影》却有翟氏父子（Chu Chai and Winberg Chai）的英译，上述一段，译文是这样的：

I watched him in his black cloth cap and black cloth jacket and dark blue cotton padded gown, as he waddled to the tracks and slowly climbed down——this was not so difficult after all. But when he had crossed the lines he had much trouble clambering up the other side. He clutched the platform with both hand and tried to heave his legs up, his burly body straining to the left and showing much effort. At the sight of his back tears started to my eyes......

英译是忠实流畅的。
